Volunteering in Thailand
The land of smiles, otherwise known as Thailand, has become a favored destination for many of today's volunteers, both young and old. The reasons are many, but some of the main attractions are its people, their very unique culture, and or course, that hot tropical weather. There are many opportunities opening up for volunteers in the old Siam, with options opening for both short and long term commitments.
Imagine the fun of joining a growing number of global volunteers who have all wanted to get to know Thailand in a different way. It's a truly rewarding experience where you can not only make new friends but acquire new skills and develop your understanding of a merging society. You'll get to experience the Thai culture first hand too. Although specific skills are always welcome in any volunteering work, they are not usually necessary as there are many posts to fill that require little more than enthusiasm and commitment. |

International Volunteer Opportunities of a Lifetime!
International volunteer opportunities offer individuals and groups the chance to really do something for the good of others less fortunate than themselves. More often than not, whenever we look at a job description most of us are inclined to ask 'what's in it for me?', but whenever you're looking at volunteering opportunities the question should really be 'what can I do to help?'
Volunteer programs are exactly that, voluntary, meaning unpaid, or at the most a small living allowance. However, the rewards for giving one’s self for the benefit of others far exceed that of any cash payouts. Ask any doctor who has been volunteering in deepest Africa for a couple of years free of charge and most will tell you that their volunteer opportunity has been the best thing they have ever done in their lives period. But how can that be? Working for peanuts or less, often living in basic accommodation, working long hours with substandard equipment! It just doesn't make sense, or does it?
Well, it's certainly not rocket science as it's a well known fact that giving is by far more rewarding than receiving. But despite this the bottom line is that the majority of folks in western societies live a selfish lifestyle often thinking about their wants over their needs, and caring little for anyone or anything outside of their immediate family circle. The world has gotten greedy beyond belief, but as societies break down and communities crumble, many still choose to pursue the self centered lifestyle.
Those who do break away and get involved in perhaps community service opportunities or some volunteer service abroad, usually become much better people as a result of their volunteer experiences. Some people argue that by pursuing international volunteer opportunities is still an act based on self because the individuals are only doing it because it makes them feel good and worthy. Although this is true, it's the right kind of selfish act. When one human being gets pleasure for no other reason than helping his fellow man, then there is absolutely no harm and no shame in feeling wonderful because of it.
Caring for our fellows is what the very fabric of society should be whether that's at home or in a foreign country. It's what makes us complete as people. No self-centered, self-seeking, egotistical human being can truly be happy with his lot despite his accumulated wealth and possessions. There's nothing wrong with being well-off and doing ok for yourself and your family, but more often than not, we pursue a lifestyle at the expense of others with our work, work, work attitude, and for what? Just so that we can buy more stuff, and to hell with anyone who gets in our way.
If you have an empty gap in your life, or are able to devote some free time to a just cause, then why not look at international volunteer opportunities that may suite your personality, skills, and abilities. It might just be the best move you have ever made in your entire life. Home will always be here not matter what, but the chance to reach out in distant lands where they desperately need volunteers who have educations and skills, may not always be an option.
There are literally hundreds of international volunteer opportunities including positions in justice, medicine, peacemaking, art and zoology. Others may include openings with well known organizations such as Earthwatch, the Red Cross, Cross-Cultural Solutions, Oxfam ad infinitum.
A unpaid helper who did a 2 year stint for Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) said that he'd been a poor rich man for most of his life but the day he became an international volunteer, he felt like a rich poor man and it transformed his whole attitude and outlook upon life for the better.
